The old frame building used by the Pierce General Store was moved to the middle of the street for temporary use while the present masonry building was being constructed. The new store was built in 1907 by Mr. and Mrs. Coon. Page 18
St. Mary's Church was built in 1870 by original settlers from Ireland and is still in use today. The first Pastor was Rev. Martin Healy. The Parish started with 49 members and now has 886 members. They own and maintain a cemetery east of the Church, which was purchased in 1874. A large parish hall was built in 1955 which is used regularly for religious education classes, wedding receptions, parish socials, dances and community projects. Page 19
In 1822, the First Congregational Church was formed in the home of Captain Pierce. Their creed leaned toward the Calvinistic belief. A more liberal group from Oberlin influenced many of the congregation to accept their idea of "Free Salvation". As a result the Second Congregational Church was organized in 1844. The site of the building was on River Street where the former home of Charles Clark, Jr. now stands.
The cornerstone of this present church edifice on Abbott Street was laid in 1877 and dedicated in January, 1879.
In 1974 the congregation celebrated its 130th anniversary. Our present membership is 400, church school 100.
The first and Second Congregational Churches combine a history of 154 years here in the Wakeman Community.
